Short Film Thoughts

This past week, we had to create a short film to show the class. We were able to chose any genre that we wanted and the filming process was very open to our imagination. My group and I decided to do a Western short film since it wouldn't be too hard. No one had any prior acting or filming knowledge, so we wanted to go with something simple that is also effective. With the film being fairly short, we thought that doing a standard western standoff would be entertaining. We looked at videos online of western standoffs, so that we could get a general understanding of what is needed to make successful film.  The filming process was very interesting as no one had prior knowledge of what to do. Doing a Western film was not the best idea since we weren't able to shoot in a desert area and lacked an accurate costume and props. I ended up being one of the main characters, and the one to win the standoff. I wasn't very sure of what to do while shooting, so some of the shots don't ...

Chapter 8 and 9 Reflection

Some important aspects of film that are mentioned in chapter 8 and 9 are sound and acting. To begin with, sound is used in almost every film to enhance the story. There is dialogue and music. Dialogue is just the written or spoken words by characters in the film. The two types of music are diegetic sound which is music or audio heard by the characters on screen, and non-diegetic sound which is music or audio not part of the world of the film, and only the audience can hear. In addition, sound editing and sound mixing is used to create the audio we hear. Sound mixing is used after sound editing and finalizes the project. Moving onto acting, the history of it dates back to as early as the Greeks in 534 BCE. Over the years acting has developed drastically, drawing bigger and bigger audiences. There are two schools of acting including the Stanislavski Method and Classical School. The Stanislavski Method used a new naturalistic acting style while the Classic School style had an emphasis on ...

Get Out Thoughts

Get Out is a 2017 horror film directed by Jordan Peele, which follows the protagonist, Chris Washington, who visits his white girlfriend's family estate only to uncover a disturbing truth. While Chris is his girlfriend's parents house he is hypnotized by the mother. Soon this lead to the discovery that his girlfriend is dating black men and using them to brainwash and put their consciousness in other people. This film utilized a lot of Hitchcock's techniques as Peele has been a huge fan of his work. Similar to Hitchcock, the film is very suspenseful leaving the audience wondering what is going to happen next. I thought this film was very enjoyable and kept me constantly engage and curious, so I would definitely watch it again. My favorite scene is when Chris decides to go check his phone and as he walks up the stairs everyone else stops what they are doing to stare towards him. This scene is very creepy and made me realize that something was seriously off with everyone at ...

Marie Antoinette Thoughts

Marie Antoinette is a 2006 film directed by Sofia Coppola, which focuses on the life of Marie Antoinette as she becomes the queen of France. The movie ends with the people of France rioting and storming Versailles asking for the Queen as it seems to mark the beginning of the French Revolution. During this scene, it is foreshadowed that she will get her head chop off as she bows off the balcony.  The film does not exactly keep of with historical standards, but provides some modernity with many aspects of the. I think that Coppola does this to make the movie more entertaining and watchable because without it, it would seem like strictly a history movie. I felt that this made the interesting and was one of the main reasons I would even watch it, however, I probably wouldn't watch it again due to most of it being boring. One thing that I enjoyed after watching was the use of vibrant colors, I felt like it made the film a lot more visually appealing. My favorite scene in the film ...

Movies in the Theater vs Movies at Home

When the Covid pandemic started theaters closed, bringing the debate watching movies in the theater or watching movies at home. Both options boost advantages and disadvantages, but the choice ultimately comes does to personal preferences.  When watching movies in the theater it provides the audience with a fun social experience as you can go with friends and family and discuss the film after. It also provides a larger, immersive experience with a massive screen and a great sound system that enhances the overall impact of the film. In addition, movies in theaters are often released early allowing you to be the first to see film instead of having to wait. Some disadvantages include the cost as tickets, concessions, and transportation can make this an experience trip. Also, you are forced to find a showtime that fits your schedule. When watching movies at home you are able to be at your own convenience, choosing what film, when to start it, and the ability to pause it or rewind it. Al...

Rear Window Thoughts

Rear Window is 1954 thriller, mystery film directed by Alfred Hitchcock, which focuses on the protagonist, L.B. Jefferies, who spends is time looking out his window at his neighbors. Jefferies is stuck in his apartment due to an injury taking place while taking photos. With the help of his love interest, Lisa Fremont, and his nurse, Stella, Jefferies solves the murder of his neighbor's wife.  This movie uses a unique camera perception of only seeing the story through the eyes of Jefferies or though his apartment, which provides a suspenseful viewing experience. I think that without this point of view, the movie would lack interesting storytelling. My favorite scene is this film is when Lisa breaks into Lars apartment to try and find evidence of the murder. I thought that this scene showed the growth in the relationship between Jefferies and Lisa because Lisa wanted to impress Jefferies by going out her way to help him. Furthermore, when Lisa was caught by Lars, Jefferies seemed ver...
